Truckee, Ca
The offices of GLA Morris Construction and GLA Real Estate Development, Inc. are located just west of Historic Downtown Truckee in an area known as Brickelltown. This is a very historic neighborhood that is located below the base of a steep hill which used to have many springs and wells. Across from our offices in Brickelltown is the Railroad. In the early years of Truckee, around 1868, many of the town's most prominent citizens lived in Brickelltown. The original Coburn’s Station occupied much of the neighborhood.
Brickelltown was subdivided by a lumber company owned by W. H. Kruger and E.J. Brickell. Many of the employees of the lumber company built their homes in Brickelltown. Truckee’s “China Town” was built on the hill above Brickelltown. China Town was inhabited by the descendants of Chinese laborers brought in to help build the transcontinental railroad.
Thomas Grossman acquired 5 lots in Brickelltown in 1992. On the front two lots were two old structures that were ready to fall down. The Town of Truckee was newly incorporated and did not have historic guidelines for the removal or reconstruction of old buildings. The Town steadfastly refused to allow the demolition or replacement of the two old structures which contributed nothing by an eyesore to Donner Pass Road, the main thoroughfare through town.
After years of negotiating with historical committees, economic hardship reports and planning commission meetings, the Town finally gave approval to replace the old structures with architecture that met the design guidelines that were as yet undecided. Now, several years after completion of the project known as Prospect Hill, the development has been a resounding success. Even the anti development, no growth crowed who apposed the project have embraced the project as a fine example of historic redevelopment.
Prospect Hill has many fine Tenants. Tippy Canoe and River Stone are wonderful stores which offer home furnishings and home decorations that compliment mountain living. GLA Morris Construction and GLA Real Estate Development, Inc. are located above a fine dentist office. Other tenants include a medical office specializing in family counseling, and Glow Hair Saloon.
